Lawrence Phillips died today. He was found dead in prison. Yes he was in prison. He was in for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. He was going to face charges for killing his cellmate. This was the end of a very violent life.
It wasalso the end to a life that confirmed twenty years ago that even college sports were a corrupt cesspool of coddling criminals if they could play well. Phillips famously beat his ex-girlfriend and another Nebraska athlete and was suspended by Coach Tom Osborne. Osborne's insecurity gnawed at him, and before the year was over, Phillips was reinstated to the team. He played in the bowl game to seal the team's National Championship. Just win baby.
Phillips was drafted high in the first round despite concerns over his behavior. It did not take long for him to wash out. He was such a gifted physical talent that he continued to get chances. Honestly, they just want to win. Sickening.
My favorite post-football story of Phillips was when he had an argument with some teens he played pick up football with and he tried to run them over with his car. This guy never ever should have been reinstated at Nebraska and never ever given a shot in the NFL.
